For employees with a Flexible Spending Account (FSA), the end of the year heralds a flurry of dentist and doctor’s appointments as people rush to use any remaining funds before it’s too late to use their funds on health and fitness-related purchases.

Unlike a Health Savings Account (HSA), a FSA does not roll over into the following year—known as the “use it or lose it” rule of FSA. Employees under the Affordable Care Act may be able to carry up to $500 into the following year without losing funds, but excess funds will still need to be used before January 1.

If you’re up to date with all your annual checkups and you still have money left in the account, it can be difficult to find last-minute FSA-eligible products and procedures. But before you load up your cart at the nearby drugstore, consider checking out your local Utah health and fitness center.

FSAs can be used for a number of different healthcare-related services, from acupuncture and preventative eye surgery to medical products such as lactation supplies and blood pressure monitors. However, most people don’t realize FSA funds can also be applied at qualifying health and fitness facilities.

While your average gym membership may not be eligible for reimbursement, comprehensive health programs, such as Total Health and Fitness in Utah, will accept most employees’ FSA accounts.

At Total Health and Fitness, we offer personal, customized diet and exercise plans for Utah individuals interested in building a long-lasting health and wellness routine. Our personal trainers and nutritionists ensure clients are learning how to properly work out and eat healthy in a way that works for them.

Overall health is more than just yearly flu shots and teeth cleanings. This year, skip the basket full of miscellaneous drug store items and invest in a commitment to exercise, strength training and healthy eating—before those FSA funds run out.
