DEXA vs. InBody: which do you actually need?
Both are legitimate tools. Here is the honest difference, so you can pick the right one.
DEXA scan
- X-ray based imaging
- Measures bone density plus body composition
- Typically a paid appointment at an imaging center
- Results usually handed to you as a report
If your doctor ordered a DEXA for bone density, keep that appointment.
InBody scan at THF
- No X-rays, no radiation
- Measures body fat %, muscle mass, and water balance
- Free at our private Draper studio
- We review your results with you and help you turn them into a plan
The same body composition tech used in hospitals and pro sports.
Four numbers that change the plan.
The InBody breaks down what the scale can not.
Body fat %
Not just your weight, but how much of you is fat versus lean.
Muscle mass
See the muscle the scale hides, and protect it as you change.
Segmental analysis
Muscle and fat balance across arms, legs, and trunk.
Metabolic rate
An estimate of the calories your body burns at rest.
InBody provides an estimate of body composition for educational and tracking purposes. It is not a medical or diagnostic test.
Two people. Same weight.
Two very different bodies.
The scale can not tell the difference, but the InBody can. Body composition shows what is actually changing as you eat and train, so your plan is built on real numbers.
- Results reviewed with you, in plain language
- Registered Dietitian on the team
- A clear next step, whether or not you ever train with us
Before you book
Is this a DEXA scan?
No. DEXA uses low-dose X-ray and also measures bone density. InBody uses bioelectrical impedance to measure body composition: body fat, muscle mass, and water balance. If your doctor ordered a DEXA, keep that appointment. If you want your body composition numbers plus a walkthrough of what they mean, that is exactly what the free InBody scan gives you.
Is the InBody scan really free?
Yes. The scan and the results walkthrough are free at our Draper studio. There is no commitment and no pressure to join anything.
What should I wear or do beforehand?
Comfortable clothes are perfect. We will cover the simple do’s and don’ts when we call to schedule your visit.
