Let’s face it, being a mom and staying fit is hard! We are constantly on the go from the early hours of the morning to late at night. We’re in a non-stop race to try to get everything done as best we can, and we rarely have time to look after ourselves. You would think that with all of this activity, we would be healthy and in great shape. However,  it’s also easy to over-indulge on snacks and junk food, since you’re always on the go.

Decisions, Decisions

As moms who want to stay fit, what are our options?

Workout Buddy: Whether it’s your next-door neighbor, a friend, or a family member, get a workout buddy that will hold you accountable. Set a specific time during the day so that it won’t get lost in your busy schedule. A workout buddy will not only help you feel more comfortable at the gym but will hold you accountable to your fitness goals.

Work Out at Home: Maybe you have tried and failed several times but don’t give up! Just change the way you do it. Try breaking up your workout into smaller lengths of time throughout the day. For example, instead of feeling like you need to workout for an hour, do some cardio for 25 minutes in the morning and lift weights for 25 minutes in the evening. This will seem like more manageable chunks of time that fit better into your busy schedule.

Self Care: As a mom, you focus so much on other people that you often don’t spend enough time to focus and care for yourself. Download a meditation or yoga app on your phone and set aside a few minutes of your day to relax and relieve stress. By giving yourself some time to focus on yourself, you will feel refreshed and rejuvenated to take care of your family.

Healthy Eating: Diets are tricky and often unrealistic. Instead of drastically changing the way you eat or what you eat, focus on healthy meals and snacks that fit into your day. Make simple changes to your plate. Instead of loading up on the delicious but fatty or carb-loaded foods, add more vegetables. Also, try prepping healthy little snacks as you’re making dinner. If healthy snacks are readily available, then you won’t end up snacking on junk food. By making simple changes, you will be surprised by how much better you feel.

Remember, being healthy is not just about feeling good about yourself (although that’s important, too!). It’s also about having good energy levels to meet your daily objectives, feeling comfortable in your jeans, looking after yourself, and enjoying life.
