The number on the bathroom scale can be one of the most discouraging parts of trying to get healthier. You eat better for two weeks, train consistently, and the scale barely moves, or it even goes up. That does not mean nothing is happening. It usually means the scale is measuring the wrong thing.
At Total Health and Fitness in Draper, we use a tool called an InBody scan to look past total body weight and show what is actually changing underneath it. If you have heard the term and are not sure what it does or whether it is worth your time, here is a plain-language look at what an InBody scan is, what it measures, and how our team uses the results.
What Is an InBody Scan?
An InBody scan is a body composition analysis. Instead of relying on one number on a scale, it sends a low-level electrical current through the body to estimate how much of your weight is fat, muscle, and water. The process is non-invasive, involves no needles, and takes about 60 seconds. You stand on the device, hold the handles, and your results are ready right away.
An InBody scan provides an estimate of body composition for educational and tracking purposes. It is not a medical or diagnostic test, and it does not replace advice from your doctor.
What Does an InBody Scan Actually Measure?
The printout covers more ground than a scale ever could. The numbers our clients care about most are:
- Body fat percentage: how much of your weight is fat versus lean mass.
- Skeletal muscle mass: the muscle a scale cannot show you, which matters if you are trying to build or protect it.
- Segmental analysis: how muscle and fat are distributed across your arms, legs, and trunk, so you can see if one area is lagging behind the others.
- Resting metabolic rate: an estimate of the calories your body burns at rest, based on your body composition.
Two people can weigh the exact same amount and have very different bodies underneath that number. One data point never tells the whole story, which is part of why we look at the scale alongside body composition rather than in place of it.
Why Body Composition Tracking Matters More Than a Single Weigh-In
If you only track weight, a week where you gain muscle and lose fat can look like standing still, or even like backsliding. Tracking body composition over time shows the trend that a single weigh-in cannot.
As an example of what this can look like: someone who shifts from mostly cardio to regular strength training may see the scale hold steady for weeks while body fat percentage drops and muscle mass rises underneath. That would be real progress, even though the scale did not move. It is also part of why tracking body composition tends to keep people motivated when the scale alone would not have shown any of it.
Body composition data is also useful for spotting patterns early. If muscle mass is trending down while you are trying to lose weight, that is a signal to look at protein intake or training volume before more weight comes off the wrong way.
What to Expect When You Get an InBody Scan at THF
Getting scanned takes about a minute, and comfortable clothing you would normally wear to work out is enough. Once the scan is done, one of our team members walks you through the printout right away, so you are not left trying to interpret it on your own.
You do not have to already be a client to get scanned. A free InBody scan is included with a free consultation at our Draper studio, whether you are still deciding if THF is the right fit or you already train with us and want a progress check.
How Our Team Uses Your Results
During your consultation, one of our professional Nutritionist/Trainers reviews your numbers with you in plain language, not medical jargon. Instead of handing you a printout and leaving you to figure it out, we talk through what the numbers mean for your specific goals, whether that is building muscle, losing fat, or simply understanding where you stand before making any changes.
Total Health and Fitness also has a Registered Dietitian on our team, and can loop them in when your results point to nutrition changes that would help you reach your goals.
Common Questions About InBody Scans
Does an InBody scan hurt? No. Most people do not feel anything beyond standing on the device and holding two handles, similar to stepping on a bathroom scale.
How is it different from just checking my weight? Your weight is a single number. An InBody scan breaks that number down into fat, muscle, and water, and shows how they are distributed across your body.
Do I need to do anything beforehand? Wearing comfortable clothing is enough for most people. Your coach can share any specific tips before your scan.
Is the scan a diagnosis of any health condition? No. It is a tracking and education tool, not a medical or diagnostic test, and it is not a substitute for care from your doctor.
